CHEDA Update

June 2010 Quarterly Executive Director Report
I guess the motto for spring/summer of 2010 is “don’t forget your umbrella!” It is about time that the faucet gets turned off and the heat gets turned on. Sunny weather would sure be nice!!

The story for 2010 still looks grim as the economy continues to struggle. We are starting to pick away at our budgets and it is looking like continued challenges for local and state government as reduced tax collections and reduced local government aid are on the horizon for at least 2010 -2012. Hopefully we will see some positive changes in 2012.

March 2010 Quarterly Executive Director Report
Winter is finally nearing its end. Generally temperatures were mild but the snow was deep. Now as it melts off we are keeping a watchful eye on the river as it has reached flood stage.

2010 will prove to be a challenging yet interesting year for CHEDA. The economy continues to struggle, although in Crookston we are seeing some signs of recovery as some companies are advertising for positions that are new or were let go during last year’s cutbacks. The State’s budgetary issues will continue to impact our community as significant reductions to Local Government Aid loom in our future. This will likely have some impact on CHEDA revenues in the future, but as of now that impact is still unknown. I should also note that economic development activity is starting to pick up as we are starting to see some interest from individuals and businesses looking for commercial spaces to either expand or start up a business.

December 2009 Quarterly Executive Director Report
It was an interesting Fall as the weather just could not seem to make up its mind. We had flurries a couple of times but winter held off till the last week of November which allowed some time to get projects done (between rain events). Now it looks like winter has set in and it is time to hunker down and break out the ice fishing gear. Generally it appears that most area farmers were able to complete their harvest efforts though it was later than usual.
August 2009 Quarterly Executive Director Report
It is August and we are still waiting for summer. It has been an unusually cool summer which is great if you have labor intense projects but it is challenging if you like the warm weather for recreating. This also creates some challenges for the local crops as most crops like the warm weather.
April 2009 Quarterly Executive Director Report
It is April and now that it looks like the cold harsh winter is finally coming to an end, I will step out on a limb and say that spring should be right around the corner. The Valley has been battling flooding this year and so far Crookston has managed to avoid significant damage thanks to a very organized City Emergency Operations effort and the on-going construction of flood control projects.
August 2008 Quarterly Executive Director Report
It is now evident that the end of Summer is right around the corner as evidenced by the farmers starting to combine Barley and Wheat as well as the recent availability of locally grown sweet corn. This is my first of what will be a quarterly “Update” and plans are to make the next update available in October....
